The Expanding BMW Electric Range

In 2015, the market share for anything with a plug – Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) was just 1.1%. Fast forward five years and that share had grown to just under 11%, and rising almost daily.

There’s around 300,000 pure-electric vehicles on the roads of the UK, with a further 600,000 (approximately) plug-in hybrids. The demand for electric vehicles is consistent, and constant. Is it any wonder that manufacturers such as BMW are expanding their range at such a rate?

Electromobility

BMW have coined the phrase “Electromobility” to cover the development and production of their electric vehicles, and it’s a market that they’re investing heavily in. Of course, like most manufacturers, they’ve stated that they want to cease production of fossil-fuelled vehicles in the not-too-distant future, but for now, they go hand-in-hand with the PHEVs, so development continues.

The electric BMW range (currently) covers most segments of the market – the small mini, SUV, SAV, and saloon, that is: i3, i3s (the sporty i3), iX3, iX, and the i4.

Power ranges from 170 horsepower (which in itself is enough to see the i3 sprint to 62mph in just over seven seconds) right through to sportscar performance with 530hp (four seconds for the 0-62mph sprint).

Can we just take a moment for reflection here … we’ve been in the trade a long time, it really wasn’t that long ago that 170hp was considered as ample enough power for all but the very sportiest of cars, and now this is BMWs entry-level power for their BEV. Incredible.

Range Anxiety-less

Even today, with millions spent in development, the strongest argument that a devout fossil-fuel worshipper can come up with, is talk of range. BUT … that argument doesn’t hold water; the iX for example has a WLTP range of around 380 miles, or thinking of that another way, that’s about six hours’ worth of constant motorway driving. Would you really want to go further than that without a break? (Or even a ‘comfort’ stop?).

When you start looking at the benefits, it’s amazing that electric driving is still in the infancy of the technology: quieter, smoother, instant power, reduced running costs, increased space, better technology … numerous benefits are available by switching to electric power, and BMW are just the engineers to maximise those benefits.
